Mid level ophthalmic personnel (MLOP) is a skilled person whose academic and clinical training qualifies him/her to carry out ophthalmic procedures. These are done under the direction or supervision of an ophthalmologist or a physician licensed to practice medicine and surgery and qualified in ophthalmology.

There is a serious shortage of skilled ophthalmologist in developing countries and efforts must be taken to ensure that their time is used effectively, MLOPs play a vital supportive role to ophthalmologist. MLOPs must be used in the correct ophthalmologist-to-MLOP ratio (usually one ophthalmologist to five MLOPs ) in order to free up ophthalmologist time to perform surgery and to lower costs by utilizing less expensive professionals.

All measures should be taken to ensure that continuous medical education is explored for all categories of eye care personnel. Continuing medical education was fragmented and poorly developed in most countries. Recent trends in reorienting traditional Continuing Medical Education (CME) should be adopted. The feasibility of periodic assessment of professional competence, based on criteria must be developed.
Abstract: This paper describes refresher training and continuing education programme in clinical and community ophthalmology for para-medical ophthalmic assistants (PMOAs) conducted by the Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology. The course participants included PMOAs working either in district hospitals, primary health centres or mobile units. The training covered areas like patient counselling, instrument and equipment maintenance, and assistance in the operation theatre for newer surgical procedures which were lacking in the basic training were fulfilled in this training programme. |
