Library classification forms part of the field of library and information science. It goes hand in hand with library (descriptive) cataloging under the rubric of cataloging and classification, sometimes grouped together as technical services. Library classification systems are one of the two tools used to facilitate subject access. The other is alphabetical indexing languages such as Thesaurui and Subject Headings systems. A library classification is a system of coding and organizing library materials (books, serials, audiovisual materials, computer files, maps, manuscripts, realia) according to their subject and allocating a call number to that information resource. Similar to classification systems used in biology, bibliographic classification systems group entities that are similar together typically arranged in a hierarchical tree structure (assuming none-faceted system)

The last two decades have witnessed an unprecedented rise in the subscription prices of scientific and technical journals, at a pace far higher than the general inflation rate. Even libraries in rich universities in the advanced countries have felt the pinch and have to cut down on the number of journals they subscribe to. Universities and research institutions in the developing world have felt it even more. This higher subscription cost hampers production of new knowledge. Hence open access movement is needed to a great extent. Here is the list of website which provides Open access.

Association of Vision Science Librarians FOUNDING The idea of forming an organization of vision science librarians began at the 1965 meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in Denver, where representatives from all the Optometry Schools, including five librarians, met to discuss the idea. The informal gathering was repeated the following December, and at the 1968 meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in Beverly Hills, California, U.S.A., the Association of Visual Science Librarians was officially founded. A Statement of Purpose was formalized in 1969. The Association of Vision Science Librarians is an international organization composed of professional librarians, or persons acting in that capacity, whose collections and services include the literature of vision. Among current members are individuals who work within libraries that serve educational institutions, eye clinics and hospitals, and private companies with an interest in eye or vision-related products and services.
